Del Mar At A Glace

DelMar.jpg

When the rich and famous need a vacation, where do they go? They go to Del Mar! Del Mar is a small coastal city in northern San Diego County and about an hour and a half south of Los Angeles. With under 4,500 residents, it’s a big change from the hustle and bustle of city life. Visitors and residents love Del Mar because they can finally slow down and enjoy California for what it is: paradise.

Del Mar is popular for its peaceful ambiance, historic downtown, scenic landscapes, thoroughbred racing, and of course, the world-famous California beaches.

Relax in Paradise

What’s paradise without a little rest and relaxation? When the stresses of city life start to get to you, there’s no better place to unwind than Del Mar. The slower pace of life simply melts the stress away, and the dozens of parks, luxury accommodations, and pristine beaches only amplify the calming effects of the city.

Powerhouse Park in Northern Del Mar is a favorite for visitors and residents alike. The wide-open expanse of luscious green grass provides the perfect spot for family picnics or simply relaxing in the sun. When it starts to get warm, head down to the attached beach to enjoy a surf session at one of the rare reef breaks in the area or the nearby easy beach break, take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean, or take a romantic beach walk up to nearby Dog Beach.

After a morning in the sun, take a stroll — because you won’t need a car — down Camino Del Mar through downtown and visit the spas, boutiques, and quaint restaurants that fill the historic downtown. Maybe even book a tee time at the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course, which is set to be the location for the 2021 U.S. Open.

Adventure Around Every Corner

Relaxing is wonderful, but you also need a healthy dose of adventure as well. Del Mar has you covered. Like most cities in California, Del Mar is full of scenic landscapes that are perfect for hiking and outdoor activities.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve contains 1,500-acres of land that remains as it was before the city was built. Enjoy a day on the trail, hiking to one of the several overlooks or down to the beach. If you’re looking for an extra dose of adrenaline, soar over the water from the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Finish out the day with a picnic overlooking the dramatic landscape of the California coastline.

No article about Del Mar is complete without mentioning the famous racetrack! The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is located at the Del Mar fairgrounds. It’s one of the most prestigious racetracks in the country. At race time, it’s not hard to spot dozens of celebrities amongst the crowds. Even when the horses aren’t racing, the fairgrounds offer plenty of other events throughout the year including live concerts, extreme sports, the annual Pug Party (Yes, it’s as adorable as it sounds), and the famous San Diego County Fair!

There’s always something to do in Del Mar. Be sure to check out other events like the local farmers’ markets and the annual Harvest Festival. At the Taste of Del Mar celebration, try out one of the thirty local food vendors to experience the flavors of sunny California. And when Christmas time rolls around, Santa comes to town! At the Santa by the Sea festival, you can visit jolly old Saint Nick beachside, but what more could you possibly wish for besides sitting on a warm beach in December?

You’re not the only one who needs adventure; don’t forget about your four-legged friends! Del Mar — and San Diego in general — is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country. In fact, there’s an entire beach dedicated to furry buddies. North Beach, nicknamed “Dog Beach”, even allows pets to run off-leash for maximum adventure potential.
